How Do You Close Apps on an iPhone?
To close an app on a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause about halfway up the screen to open the App Switcher. You will see all your open apps displayed as cards. Swipe up on any card to close that app completely.

Why Would You Need to Close an App on iPhone?
Closing an app completely — sometimes called "force closing" — clears whatever the app was doing in the background and gives it a fresh start the next time you open it. This is especially useful when an app is frozen, running slowly, or displaying something unusual, like an error message or a suspicious alert that does not go away.

In this J's Tech Corner video, I show a real example: if Facebook displays a fake message saying your account has been hacked, closing the app out completely and reopening it typically clears the issue and returns the app to normal.

How to Force Close an App on iPhone (Step by Step)
From your home screen, or from within any app, swipe up from the very bottom edge of the screen. Instead of releasing right away, pause when your finger is about halfway up the screen. This opens the App Switcher, showing all of your currently open apps as a row of cards.

Find the app you want to close and swipe up on that card. It will disappear from the App Switcher, meaning the app is now fully closed. Repeat this for as many apps as you want to close.

To reopen the app, just tap its icon on your home screen like normal — it will open fresh.

Does This Work on Every iPhone?
This swipe gesture works on Face ID iPhones — iPhone X and later — which do not have a Home button. If your iPhone has a Home button, including any iPhone SE model, you close apps by double-clicking the Home button to open the App Switcher instead of swiping.

Will Closing an App Delete Anything?
No. Closing an app does not delete the app, your data, or your login information. It simply stops the app from running in the background so it can start fresh the next time you open it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does closing an app on iPhone save battery?
Modern iPhones manage background apps efficiently on their own, so routinely closing every app does not meaningfully improve battery life. Closing an app is most useful when that specific app is frozen, glitching, or acting unusual — not as a regular habit.

How do I close an app on an iPhone with a Home button?
On an iPhone with a Home button, including iPhone SE, double-click the Home button to open the App Switcher, then swipe up on the app card you want to close.

Why does my app say I've been hacked?
This is often a glitch or a fake pop-up rather than an actual security issue. Closing the app out completely and reopening it, as shown in this video, will usually clear the message. If it continues to appear, consider updating the app or checking your account security directly through the app's official settings.
