How Do You Scan Documents on iPhone?
To scan a document on iPhone, open the Files app, tap the three-dot menu in any folder, and select Scan Document. Point your camera at the document and the phone captures it automatically. Adjust the filter or rotate if needed, tap the checkmark, and save it to your preferred folder as a PDF. No extra app or scanner required.
Your iPhone Already Has a Document Scanner
Most people go looking for a scanning app — but the tool is already built into your iPhone. The Files app includes a document scanner that captures clean, readable PDFs using your phone's camera.
In this J's Tech Corner video, I walk through the full process from start to finish using the Files app. It works for contracts, receipts, forms, handwritten notes, and anything else you need to save as a digital file.

How to Scan a Document on iPhone Using Files (Step by Step)
Start by opening the Files app on your iPhone. Navigate to the folder where you want to save the scan — Downloads is a simple default. Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen, then tap Scan Document.
Your camera will open and the phone begins looking for the edges of the document automatically. Hold it steady over the page and it captures on its own — you do not need to press anything. Once captured, you will see filter options along the bottom: you can adjust the filter style, rotate the image, or delete the scan if you need to try again.
When you are satisfied, tap the checkmark in the lower right corner. On the next screen, tap Save. Your scanned document is saved as a PDF to the folder you selected.
What Filters Are Available for iPhone Document Scans?
After scanning, iPhone gives you several filter options to improve readability — including color, grayscale, black and white, and a photo mode that preserves the original look. For most documents, the black and white or grayscale options produce the cleanest, most readable result.
Can You Scan Multiple Pages at Once?
Yes — after each capture, you can continue scanning additional pages before saving. The Files scanner will stack them into a single multi-page PDF. Tap the checkmark only when you are done scanning all the pages you need.
